There were 13,491 deaths in 2006 due to drunk driving. However, in 2007 there was a 3.7 decrease with only 12,998 deaths from crashes involving drinking and driving. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities have gone down by 47%, from 30,000 to less than 16,000 since 1980 (when Mother Against Drunk Driving was founded). MADD is credited with having helped save over 358,000 lives. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration FARS data, 2004. In 1980, there were 51,091 traffic fatalities. If 60% were alcohol-related (as in 1982 when we had valid BAC data), that translates to 30,655 that were alcohol-related. It is reasonable to believe that the AR rate in 1980 was at least as high as 1982 (it was probably higher). So that is why we say when MADD started in 1980, there were over 30,000 AR fatalities.

Beware of DriveTime Insurance

About six weeks ago I was sitting at a stop sign before turning left. I was waiting because there was a car coming from the right. Then to my horror I saw the car begin to turn left, but instead of waiting until she reached the center of the intersection to turn, the driver was cutting to corner. She obviously didn't see me before she started her turn, because when she did she slammed on the brakes and turned the wheel a hard right.

However, since the roads were wet the car still smacked into my car's front bumper and slid off to my left. Needless to say I was a little ticked, to put it mildly.

No one was hurt, and her car suffered much more damage than mine; the license-plate holder with the license plate was torn off, and there were some scrapes across the top of the bumper. Very mild damage, thankfully.

Immediately I called both my insurance company and 911 to report the accident. Then because we were in the country, we had to wait a good 30 minutes before a law enforcement officer arrived.

While waiting we exchanged insurance information, and here is where the point of this blog comes in. She presented as her proof of insurance some papers from DriveTime indicating a policy #, etc. Being uninformed at that time, I gladly accepted it as insurance.

(The other error I made: although I got her name, license plate #, insurance information, I failed to get her address and phone number...can't believe I was soooo stupid)

When the police officer showed up, he said it was up to me whether to file a report, but that if either of us ever wanted to file a claim we would need the report. She kept silent, but I said, "Do it!" (I was still upset at her reckless driving.)

Anyway, to make a long story short. A few days later when I called her insurance "provider": DriveTime, I got a very unpleasant surprise. DriveTime is only comprehensive insurance. DriveTime requires all those who finance a vehicle thru them to carry their insurance in order to protect the interests of DriveTime. However, the purchasers are told that they will have to have liability insurance thru another provider.

Guess what? If she had insurance thru another provider, she certainly didn't share that. So, the only way to get her to pay for the damage to my vehicle is to take her to small claims court. I have some time to do that, and I just may...

By the way, when the police officer handed her the ticket, he said that the judge would probably just have her take a safe driving class. To which she replied: "I just got finished taking one...a month ago. And this is my second accident since then." ????!!!!!!

Anyway, if someone tries to pass off DriveTime insurance as proof of insurance in accident, make sure you ask for their other insurance provider. If they don't have one, make sure you tell the law enforcement officer who takes the report that they are an uninsured motorist. CYA

What's In Your Trunk?

What's in your trunk? Do you have that spare tire that just happens to be flat? Do you have a pair of tangled up jumper cables? If you are like most people the trunk of the car becomes a repository for a lot of miscellaneous items that won't fit in the glove box.

For instance: sports equipment, baby stroller, empty shopping bags, and a fairly useless collection of tools, mismatched and broken, in a box with a busted lock. There may be a lawn chair and a mildewed beach towel from that trip to the beach a few weeks ago...or last summer.

In other words most people's car trunks are a mess, containing not much that would be of help in a roadside emergency or accident. What should your trunk contain?

Summer and winter your trunk should contain the following items: a blanket, boots and socks (in case you have to walk for help), high energy food, flares, a shovel, water, jumper cables, a first aid kit, a flashlight and a 50-foot length of rope. I also keep a quart of oil, a can of Fix-a-Flat, an ice scraper, a jack, a lug wrench and a milk crate.

The milk crate is used to store most of the smaller items. But it can also be turned upside down and used as a seat or as a step stool.

There are also a few items that should be kept in your glove box: a flashlight, proof of registration and insurance, a tire gauge, a pocketknife, a disposable digital camera, a notepad and pencil.

Now, between the trunk and the glove box you have the basic essentials to assist you in whatever roadside emergency you might find yourself.

Car Accidents and Teens

It is dangerous for a teen to drive. It's even more dangerous to be a teenage passenger in a vehicle driven by a teenage driver. Most deaths in motor vehicle accidents involving a teenage driver (ages 15 to20) find that the passengers are also teens.

Unfortunately the most dangerous age for a driver is sixteen, the same age that most people get their first driver's license. Drivers in this age group is more likely to be involved in a deadly motor vehicle accident than any other age group.

The combination of a new teen driver and even one more passenger of the same age is a deadly combination. The distraction rate rises in direct proportion to the number of additional passengers. The possibility of a distraction-caused accident is almost guaranteed. Thus a carload of teens is a deadly accident waiting to happen.

Should there be some kind of restrictions prohibiting new drivers having same-age (or younger) passengers within the first year of obtaining their license? If the laws don't address this danger, then perhaps it is up to parents to place some limitations on their teen drivers.

Contact your insurance company while still at the scene, or at least within the 24 to 48 hours
Call and report it to the local law enforcement
Take photos of the scene
Get the name and insurance information of the other driver(s)
Get names and contact information of witnesses
Get medical attention for any injuries
Repair (if possible) the damage to your car
If you couldn't report to your insurer earlier, call within 48 hours
